How much does a chenille yarn blanket cost?
To answer how much a handmade blanket costs, we need to start with the basics – the price of the yarn. Classic chunky chenille yarn (around 2 cm thick) usually costs about 37.90 PLN, but on sale you can get it from around 26 PLN per skein. It’s a soft polyester yarn (230–300 g, approx. 23–30 meters) that, unlike delicate merino wool, doesn’t pill, doesn’t itch, and can be washed.
The final cost depends directly on the size of your blanket:
- Small baby blanket (approx. 75 x 125 cm) You’ll need about 5 skeins. The cost ranges from approx. 130 PLN to 225 PLN.
- Standard throw (approx. 90 x 150 cm) The most popular sofa size. Requires about 6 skeins → approx. 156–270 PLN.
- Medium single blanket (approx. 125 x 150 cm) About 9 skeins → approx. 234–405 PLN.
- Large XXL bed blanket (approx. 180 x 200 cm) About 16 skeins → approx. 416–720 PLN.
Ready-made vs handmade – is it worth it?
When you check premium chunky blankets in stores, prices usually start at around 400 PLN and go up to 1200–1500 PLN for large sizes. Cheaper machine-made versions exist, but they don’t offer the same look or feel as real chunky chenille yarn.
By making it yourself, you can save around 50–70%. No tools needed – just your hands. You’re paying only for certified material (Oeko-Tex), safe for children and allergy-friendly.
Value you can’t buy in any store
Handmade is about more than money. The biggest benefit is the therapeutic effect. When you sit down, turn off distractions and start working with soft yarn, your mind naturally relaxes. The repetitive motion works like mindfulness – reducing stress and helping you focus.
And the feeling of creating your own blanket? Absolutely priceless.
